Backbeard: The Musical is an original stage production written by me, Michael Musial, Larry Tuxbury, and Brian Sheldon, and based on my Backbeard books. Backbeard premiered at the Theatre Institute at Sage in June, 2016.

The musical tells the tale of Backbeard, the hairiest pirate who ever lived, and his quest to answer the question, “How exactly should a pirate look?” When a rowdy birthday party ruins his clothes, a pair of persuasive tailors convince Backbeard to try a colorful new outfit of patterned trousers, a colorful coat, and a pig. As a result, the fearsome pirate is forced to face his greatest challenge: winning the acceptance of the pirate council, the townspeople, and his own crew.

After a successful opening at the Theatre Institute, we submitted Backbeard to the New York Musical Festival’s Next Link Project, where it was named a Grand Jury Selection. As a result, we had the amazing opportunity stage it off-Broadway for a short run in New York City in August 2017 at The Acorn Theatre at Theatre Row. It was an experience I’ll never forget.
